TOPIC#3: Current TV Journos Euna Lee and Laura Ling were sentenced to 12 years in a North Korea prison. What should happen to them?

AquaAHH: Gore needs to start speaking up and try to finagle them out of there, somehow.

bmockaveli: I wouldn’t risk my life for “journalism,” but if what I was covering was meaningful enough, I would

Love_Is_Dope: The WH needs to get on the Lee/Ling affair ASAP! That’s absolutely ridiculous.

ShaynaD: there was a report earlier that Obama is setting up mtgs w/ SKorea to discuss. He recognizes the urgency (More …)

TOPIC #2: Can writers who do NOT use Social Media survive the new journalism climate?

Love_Is_Dope: Absolutely not. Print is obviously dying. You have to be on that new -ish

thembithembi: My answer wasn’t much of a writer’s word, but social media is like the internet itself or the telephone. ppl who don’t will die out

russellnichols: Truth be told, I tried to avoid it for a minute. Still don’t have a FB. Just got on Twitter. Definitely necessary

tlawrites: I think it depends if you are a newbie or an established writer and what audience you are trying to attract (More …)

Tags: #JSticks Weekly Tweet Chat Highlights, Crossing the Line. Ethics, Morals, Professionalism, Sources

    TOPIC #1

As journalists, there’s a fine line you must walk with your sources. Whether celeb or not. How far do you go to get your story? How far do you go to get your source to open up to you? Is there a certain level of manipulation involved in the process? If so, how do you make sure you don’t cross the line, ethically?

Journalisticks: It’s important to not sell your soul to the devil in order to get a story. make no promises to sources and don’t discuss post invu. Sometimes journos are so in AWE of their subject that get caught up and are no longer objective. This is especially true with celebs.

russellnichols: I just think it’s important to be honest up front. let them know the angle and then do what you do.

aliyasking: it’s easy to cross the line. I’ve done it many times, I will be honest. I often end up crying w/my subject.

Maurice_Garland: sometimes “celebs” hit me after an interview worried about something they might have said (More …)

    sonia_sotomayor

TOPIC #3: Sonia Sotomayor’s nomination for Supreme Court…are we pleased with the coverage she is getting in media? Is it too much focus on Sotomayor’s RACE and not her Stance on issues?

aliyasking: I still want her on the Supreme Court. But her quote can’t be defended. Of course, I can’t say she’s a racist. But that quote. UGH

aliyasking: Here’s the link with “that” quote: http://feministlawprofessors.com/?p=10952

theparkerreport I think Sonia Sotomayor’s coverage is pretty fair. By all accounts she’s a pro. And those comments were out of line. She should NOT have used the word “Better” and it was NOT out of context from the speech I read. Still rooting for her.

Journalisticks: Roland Martin made a career for himself thanks to Obama’s run, what Latino/a journo/critic will blow up cause of Sotomayor?

mimivaldesryan: Sotomayor would bring more federal judicial experience to the bench than any Supreme Court justice in 100 years. Can’t beat that! (More …)

Topic #2: Lola Ogunnaike Leaves CNN

mimivaldesryan: Lola is an amazing writer, one of my favorites.

Journalisticks This saddens me b/c she was super talented however i don’t think CNN truly used her talents yet they gave DL a show…SMH!

russellnichols brilliant writer. hope she lands somewhere she can actually put her skills to work.

aliyasking I don’t know Lola personally. But I was excited to see her on CNN. The transition from print to television is super-tough.

MissSuccess My ? is y was Lola not renewed? She was great in my opinion but was obviously seen as unnecessary

theparkerreport I really liked how Lola made the jump to TV. Like @ToureX before her, I Like to see the movement from 1 medium to another.

tlawrites: Was Lola for us? Or was she for everyone? Did she really get a chance to build on her already existing audience? Hmmmm (More …)

Recently mag EICs Datwon Thomas(XXL) and Emil Wilbekin(GIANT) left their mags for the web…thoughts?

aliyasking: I think this move is very interesting. It reminds me of the late-90s when many print journalists bolted for the web. New trend?

problemchylde: He might think the internet market is more secure than print right now

WEKetchum: Yeah, def a new trend. And an interesting one at that: it’s interesting to see editors leaving on their own terms

LuvvieIg: I don’t think print should be forgotten completely. Still enjoy reading a magazine & feeling the glossy pages (More …)

    What is #Jsticks Tweet Chat?

It’s a weekly Twitter Chat for Journalists of Color presented by Journalisticks.com and moderated by Chloé A. Hilliard and Aliya S. King.

    Here’s some Highlights:

    .

“My question  deals with onspec stories. What advice do you have? Thanks”  - Makkada:

    • aliyasking: If you are a new writer an the place is established and you trust them. I say go for it. I wrote a few on-spec pieces
    • aliyasking: I also wrote for a few magazines for free. Just because I wanted clips more than I wanted money.
      .
“Breaking out of “urban” journo, what’s the best way to show other pubs that u can write general interest?”- clovito
    • aliyasking: ugh. This is a sore point for me. I keep hearing it’s impossible. But I don’t believe that
    • Journalisticks: I find that the best way to get yourself in is start with something small and have it be reported, researched and written
    • cecabrera: I hear the same thing. Developing relationships with editors somehow is really the key.
    • bmockaveli: Strong pitch: Know subject matter as expert; Have at least dozen sources that you’ve ALREADY talked to; Have decent outline mapped
