rlnave: What should we do, invade NK? And maybe next time they lob a missle at Japan, they won’t be “testing” it

blackgirlchi: I think LEE/LING did the Current story in the first place to bring to light the situation in NK. They have achieved their goal. Lee/Ling would do ANYTHING for a story (hide cameras, fake like they wanted services) and they knew the risks of going new NK.

AquaAHH: moral of the story for me is to stay far away from North Korea.

rlnave: The real question is would China have intervened had it not been the anniversary of Tiananmen Sq? I think they would have.

bmockaveli: I don’t know, but its worth advocating. The Iran & N. Korea sitches involved journos of color. Maybe UNITY should be?

bmockaveli: seriously, the issues is freedom o’press, which other nations don’t recognize. We need some kinda global treaty to avoid this. There are global conventions currently on everything but media. We need to correct that soon, or this will become more common. maybe we should push to have this on the agenda at the G20 this September in Pittsburgh

TOPIC #2: Can writers who do NOT use Social Media survive the new journalism climate?

Love_Is_Dope: Absolutely not. Print is obviously dying. You have to be on that new -ish

thembithembi: My answer wasn’t much of a writer’s word, but social media is like the internet itself or the telephone. ppl who don’t will die out

russellnichols: Truth be told, I tried to avoid it for a minute. Still don’t have a FB. Just got on Twitter. Definitely necessary

tlawrites: I think it depends if you are a newbie or an established writer and what audience you are trying to attract

mbarone: Any writer, or human in general, should have an awareness and comfort with today’s new media…. but, on the flipside, I wouldn’t check if a writer pitching me has a Twitter or Facebook profile. Just strong writing clips

aliyasking: I mean established writers. New writers have no choice. But if you’ve been in the game, can you survive w/o social media? I met Terry McMillian last weekend. I was with @ToureX at a conference in Philly. @tourex said, “are you on Twitter?” Terry said NO

lyneka: Unfortunately, their future is at stake b/c the years you spend at XYZ organization shunning social media will affect you

allaboutgeorge: If social media creators and participants are fish (heh, from plankton to whales), the Web is the ocean

lyneka : I love love social media –just not so sure writers need a twitter or fb account. They do need web experience, tho.

aliyasking: Writers NEED to have a Facebook/Twitter account. Full stop.

bmockaveli: I don’t know, but for certain social media can’t survive without established writers

Journalisticks: Some journos confuse having an online presence with being naked on the web. Have a website/resume doesn’t have to be a diary. Perhaps older/established journos think this is the case and want to remain a fly on the wall.

tlawrites: I think new writers definitely have to incorporate it into their own self promotion. Thats what people look for.

Love_Is_Dope: Established writers don’t need Twitter et al so much b/c they have a brand, but mid-level and new writers HAVE TO HAVE IT

aliyasking: I maintain that even established writers need to get on board. Their brand becomes stale w/o social media.

Journalisticks: If used right, Twitter can showcase an established journos personality. Why not learn what makes them tick?

rlnave: I look for my favorite writers in magazines and library shelves, not Facebook.

lyneka: Twitter, I’ve discovered can have a negative affect because there are def. some writers I give the side eye due to twitter.

mbarone: amen to that, there’s nothing more disheartening than reading some lame Tweets from writers I respect

ToureX: I was told by an author that when Barnes & Noble is considering what books to feature they look at how many friends you have on FB.

bmockaveli: That said, I’m about to seriously pad my FB with thousands of fake friends so I can get my book in BarnesNobles

ToureX: As a writer building a brand I suggest accepting every FB friend request you can stomach.

ToureX: One way Twitter is great for writers is in finding sources. On my last story I asked Twitter who wants to be intv’d & found lots.

Journalisticks: DO YOU THINK W.E.B. DUBOIS, ZORA NEAL THURSTON, ED BRADLEY, LANGSTON HUGHES OR JAMES BALDWIN WOULD BE ON FB/TWITTER?

rlnave: If Ellison were on social media, do you think he’d make his profile…invisible?

russellnichols: Langston Hughes would be on Twitter because he liked to keep it Simple.

AquaAHH: Langston and Zora would be squabbling on Twitter and Facebook for sure.

Love_Is_Dope: Zora would def be on FB, Twitter and everything else. She was a folklorist. She would soak up the language

Journalisticks: LET’S FACE IT. MOST ESTABLISHED JOURNOS WITH YEARS IN THE GAME DO NOT HAVE TO GET ON THE WEB, THEY CAN TURN IN STORIES VIA FAX

TOPIC #1

As journalists, there’s a fine line you must walk with your sources. Whether celeb or not. How far do you go to get your story? How far do you go to get your source to open up to you? Is there a certain level of manipulation involved in the process? If so, how do you make sure you don’t cross the line, ethically?

Journalisticks: It’s important to not sell your soul to the devil in order to get a story. make no promises to sources and don’t discuss post invu. Sometimes journos are so in AWE of their subject that get caught up and are no longer objective. This is especially true with celebs.

russellnichols: I just think it’s important to be honest up front. let them know the angle and then do what you do.

aliyasking: it’s easy to cross the line. I’ve done it many times, I will be honest. I often end up crying w/my subject.

Maurice_Garland: sometimes “celebs” hit me after an interview worried about something they might have said

Love_Is_Dope: I have communicated with celeb subjects and handlers after a story was done. Nothing shady though…

rashaunh: good questions… esp if you’re a entertainment journo. there’s a fine line between being a writer and a groupie.

C0URTNEYL0VE: celebs should have media training, you can manipulate celebs & politicians a little more than ordinary sources to get the story

aliyasking: I once interviewed a source over the course of a year. I tried to keep a distance. But when he got locked up, He called ME.

aliyasking: When I interviewed Faith for VIBE, she drank at dinner. I did not. Not a drop. She called me “Sober Sally.” But I think when she was looking for a collaborator for her book, she remembered how professional I’d been….

lyneka: I think vacationing with a celebrity or having a friendship with a celebrity you’re interviewing is too close for a reporter.

bmockaveli: it’s not improper to have a friendship with a celeb/source, you just gotta know when 2 put hat on/off, when 2 rescue self

aliyasking: Here’s an example of crossing a line. I once interviewed a singer we’ll call “Jane.” The story was supposed to be a cover for a mag. We bonded during the interview. VERY similar lives. Wrote the story. It was killed. She continued to call me occasionally. We were friendly. But not friends. Occasional texting. Updating on marriages, births. Etc. Then, I had to write a story on her ex. Ouch! And he wanted to talk a LOT of stuff about her. Although it was unethical.. I called and told her about the story…

rashaunh: I think what’s worse is friending the subject for favors or future exclusives. But that’s what the majors do.

bmockaveli: It doesn’t behoove any of us 2 friend celebs/sources tho. Eventually you’ll print something that kills friendship

ShaynaD: I’ve heard journalists say they hang w/celebs so they can “relate to their lives” better. Not sure I agree

ToureX: If you have a couple of substantive stories with someone you’ll probably become friends/buddies. That’s really helpful when you go to do another w them. They feel comfortable w you & you can be more aggressive. But don’t be fooled: they’re never your friend. You’re a writer. They smile at you, and seduce you, as part of business.

TOPIC #3: Sonia Sotomayor’s nomination for Supreme Court…are we pleased with the coverage she is getting in media? Is it too much focus on Sotomayor’s RACE and not her Stance on issues?

aliyasking: I still want her on the Supreme Court. But her quote can’t be defended. Of course, I can’t say she’s a racist. But that quote. UGH

theparkerreport:  I think Sonia Sotomayor’s coverage is pretty fair. By all accounts she’s a pro. And those comments were out of line. She should NOT have used the word “Better” and it was NOT out of context from the speech I read. Still rooting for her.

Journalisticks: Roland Martin made a career for himself thanks to Obama’s run, what Latino/a journo/critic will blow up cause of Sotomayor?

mimivaldesryan: Sotomayor would bring more federal judicial experience to the bench than any Supreme Court justice in 100 years. Can’t beat that!

mimivaldesryan: I didn’t mind her quote either. As a person of color, I have to know my world and a white man’s world in order to succeed.

Journalisticks: I’m not mad at her word use but saddened because the media will not know her POV. which is why journos of color 2 explain

mimivaldesryan: A white man doesn’t have to know my world in order to succeed,hence Sotomayor believes her experience is richer

TheJLV: Sotomayor’s quote also says her Latinaness is impt in her judging. In a given case, she may b “wisest.”

Journalisticks: People of color should not have to apologize for their experiences and POV especially when “WE” know it to be true

Topic #2: Lola Ogunnaike Leaves CNN

mimivaldesryan: Lola is an amazing writer, one of my favorites.

Journalisticks:  This saddens me b/c she was super talented however i don’t think CNN truly used her talents yet they gave DL a show…SMH!

russellnichols:  brilliant writer. hope she lands somewhere she can actually put her skills to work.

aliyasking:  I don’t know Lola personally. But I was excited to see her on CNN. The transition from print to television is super-tough.

MissSuccess:  My ? is y was Lola not renewed? She was great in my opinion but was obviously seen as unnecessary

theparkerreport:  I really liked how Lola made the jump to TV. Like @ToureX before her, I Like to see the movement from 1 medium to another.

tlawrites: Was Lola for us? Or was she for everyone? Did she really get a chance to build on her already existing audience? Hmmmm

Journalisticks:  Where do you go after TV? Is there a real interest for someone with her talent? and being a great writer doesn’t = tv star

russellnichols: Television is an entirely different medium with different sensibilities. The transition is not easy, but possible.

Recently mag EICs Datwon Thomas(XXL) and Emil Wilbekin(GIANT) left their mags for the web…thoughts?

aliyasking: I think this move is very interesting. It reminds me of the late-90s when many print journalists bolted for the web. New trend?

theparkerreport: We are NOT “late” to the game. Every journalist across the board is making the leap. Some earlier, others refuse

Journalisticks: What will Emil’s job be exactly? Often times print pubs don’t give their web side the freedom they need to succeed

aliyasking: according to the press release, he’s doing everything. Video, news, all content. And it’s very ambitious.

KillaHills: i dont think anyone knows how to make dough from publishing right now. who’s a mag that’s actually making a sig profit?

MissSuccess: It’s not a fad. Just devolution of journalism. Not more money online. Just more opportunity for the avg person. Smaller ventures must always be ahead of the curve. Which is why bigwigs are hiring underdogs.

lynneluvah: diff btwn web and print. web=real analytics based on CPM. print=you get to fudge #s for glossy pages. PC mag has gone all digital, so there’s a story there to tell in terms of revs.
